I think it is important to take time for oneself in everyday life. Like for example, within a weeks’ time my holiday begins. I look forward to these days when I do not have to plan anything, I can just be spontaneous. Most of my work is planned a year ahead so it is nice to have days when everything is open and one can decide to do things on the spur of the moment. It is planned that my 17-year old grandson will visit me. He has been to Sweden on a number of occasions and every time we meet he checks to see if he is taller than me. For some reason he seems to enjoy spending time with his old grandfather. This time he is going to help me with some of the projects I have for the garden, but apart from that we are going to do some go-karting and a little fishing. It will be nice to be together again and I know he loves being in the garden.
It is important for me to take a time out every day, if only it is just for five minutes. An important time for me is in the beginning of the day. Before my busy schedule begins I like to sit with my feelings and give them a voice. It is a wonderful way to listen to that inner voice and that helps me to reconnect with Terry the person, and not the medium. For us who live incredible busy lives with demands made upon us all the time, I believe that if we do not take timeout it can cause burn out.
In the winter time I like to clear snow or just sit and watch a good movie drinking a glass of wine. I love to entertain and cook food for friends, a time when we laugh and joke and talk about everything and nothing.
After a busy day in the course room or when other work is done, it clears my mind to just train for a while and to enjoy the wonderful sensation of having a shower afterwards, feeling very tired and physically relaxed.
I like to go to flea markets or car boot sales, it is always exciting, you never know what bargain you might find. I love the interaction of bartering; it is part of the fun.
Water has always been a magnet to me. That is why I love to sit beside the pond in our beautiful garden and listen to the sound of the waterfall, it soothes my soul.
These are just a few of the ways that I take time out and give myself those magic moments to replenish myself. I work long hours at times, that is a part of my work and my commitment to it, but I also need to be committed to my own needs in order to maintain a healthy balance.
Taking timeout can also mean laughing with colleagues and just sharing a joke, or sitting listening to my personnel during meal breaks, just chattering away. Most of the time there is laughter and they love to tease one another. Those moments are golden, relieving pressure and offering new perspective. Humour has always been a part of my life and I hope it continues to be.
There are so many ways in which we can chill out, we just need to grab the moment and allow ourselves to be, whatever the moment offers.
Enjoy your magic moments this summer!
