I remember what it was like growing up in the UK during the fifties and sixties, in a culture that had a rigid class system, where ones job or social position was paramount. We were constantly reminded of to know our place within society. I can remember the prejudice and the favouritism and very often people could gain position, not by who they were, but who they knew. Yes, since that time much has changed within British society, but elitism still prevails as I am sure it does all over the world.
This planet we call earth is inhabited by people from a vast array of different cultures, with different philosophies, attitudes, and different ways of behaving. I have known many people who are extremely intelligent, but in some cases were socially and emotionally inept. Yes, IQ is very important, but in my observations of life and people, IQ and one’s social and academic position in life is not a prerequisite for a person being emotionally intelligent.
I have also known many people who are of a so called average intelligence, but many of them have vast skills on an emotional level. What do I mean by that? They have the ability to apply their knowledge to everyday, practical situations, they do not see themselves as being part of an elite, they just get on with their jobs and their lives.
Somebody once said to me many years ago: There is no foolish work, only foolish people. What would this world be like without the ordinary people that do the ordinary, and at time mundane jobs that are necessary for a society to function? What would society be without them? There would be chaos, because without them who would serve the needs of the powers that be? They are the people that keep together the network of humanity so that society can continue to function and move forward.
I have always felt that elitism is a form of moral corruption. I still believe that it is important to have our different belief systems, but if we can begin to work together then we can also begin to eradicate the form of elitism that very often leads to prejudice. Elitism takes many different forms, but it invariably reflects the humans need to hang on to a power base that gives them an identity. I think it is time for a dialogue, because to attack one another in order to humiliate and to prove we are right takes us nowhere. It is time to become more emotionally intelligent and instead work together.
I believe in life after death, I believe in the continued existence of the human soul, that is the essence of my belief system, but I have had to learn the necessity of self-examination so I can make contact with who I really am so that part of me that is judgmental does not lose control. This is a discipline I have to use every day. Sometimes it works, sometimes it does not, but it is a great tool to raise my consciousness and examine my behaviour. As I have said before; in order for humanity to evolve we must all raise level of consciousness because in all areas of society there is ignorance, and ignorance just takes us back to the same old situation again and again.
Is it not time for us to develop a new code of moral and social conduct? Why do we have to be so judgmental towards one another? Because I believe that whatever ones position is in life we all have an important part to play, so therefore it is time to break down those divisions that create prejudice and that lead to acrimony.
I would invite those of different areas of society to have a dialogue. Let us meet, so that man can begin to understand what emotional intelligence really is. Instead of hurting one another we can unite and work towards creating a better world that embraces all forms of intelligence where we can begin to accept our differences, begin to unite and create a collective resource that serves everybody. Then perhaps we human beings will stop being so foolish and can begin to respect all forms of work or belief.
