This morning Viktoria was doing some work at the school which needed focus and concentration. I took the opportunity to spend some time with my little friend, Vilhelm.
So off to the garden we went, exploring. His powers of observation and how he could focus on one particular thing was fascinating. He wanted to be everywhere at once. It was almost as if it was too much for him to take in.
Whenever he spotted something I noticed that he would pick it up, examine it and often it went straight into his mouth. For a child to put something in their mouth and taste it gives them a feeling, I realized. As soon as they have received that feeling they either carry it for a little bit longer or they get rid of the object that gave them the feeling.
Vilhelm was also interested in particular plants; not every plant; but those that he went to he had to touch, examine and get a feeling from. Today he seemed to be very attracted to the colour yellow. I allowed him to pick some of the flowers. He sat down on the grass, like a little guru, and looked at the flower from every possible angle while making comments in his own baby talk. And as he went through this process I wondered: He is at the beginning of gathering information that will be stored in his memory and will give him a foundation of what he will become – discovering his natural potential. It was amazing to watch him develop his five senses as well as the power of coordination between mind, body and soul.
There were moments when, just for safety’s sake, I would lead him or take him by his hand, hold him. And there were times when he wanted to go off on his own, without support, without help. From time to time, interestingly enough, Vilhelm would check if I was close to him. He needed a point of reference for his own security.
On a few occasions he spotted something that was of special interest to him; he would squeal with delight and his facial expression would be full of wonderment. As if he was saying: “Ha, what are all these new things I have discovered?” When he heard different sounds he immediately wanted to investigate the source.
I took Vilhelm to the apple trees, we picked an apple and I gave him some so he could taste it. He seemed to enjoy it and wanted more. And when we met Karin in the garden she started giving him raspberries, which he certainly did not want to share with me!
Throughout our trip in the garden he was gathering information, constantly, and certainly living his life in the moment. A child of his age does not dwell on the past or think about the future. Children are always in the here and now.
What am I learning from spending time with Vilhelm?
I am realizing that I am his safety net, his point of reference, someone to be there in case he needs comfort and support. As we walked through the garden I heard him singing, not in words, but he is beginning to remember different melodies. I thought: “Ok, this is another way of saying “I’m happy”, “I’m enjoying myself” because he wanted to sing.
As I observed all these things Vilhelm was being my teacher and my friend. He was bringing me back into contact with myself. Because as I observed him I had to be completely in the here and now. Vilhelm is my friend, my teacher and a little soul that I love.
